Belhassen Tonat has dedicated close-on 18 years of his professional career in service of a legacy Financial Services industry leader shaping the future of insurance, business and society through its operations in over 150 countries globally.
Belhassen is a well-travelled multilingual operative, who has led culturally diverse and geographically dispersed workforces across several countries in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia Pacific over the course of his vocational journey.
In long service with the world leader in comprehensive reinsurance and industry counselling, Belhassen has gained broad skill sets in navigating change, risk and crisis across diverse socio-economic territories and operating environments, to deliver measurable value and progress.
He has held senior regional leadership roles in Munich Re’s Non-Life businesses over the last decade, and is a master at developing business models ahead of the market, while expertly guiding engineering, strategy, operations, sales and product teams, focused on escalating digital integration and agile operations.
In his present role, Belhassen is pioneering life-changing risk transfer and socio-economic upliftment projects across Africa. He holds notable achievements in driving financial inclusivity and infrastructure development through enabling digitisation initiatives, such as selling small-cover crop insurance to deep-rural farmers via smartphones, to protect their livelihoods in times of poor harvest.
Currently Belhassen is building, inspiring and leading Non-Life reinsurance management teams representing the Group in over 40 countries across Africa. Passionate about improving resilience and economic participation, he guides product, pricing, distribution and risk management practices across the region.
A Statistician with Business Economics and Commercial background, Belhassen holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Risk Management and Insurance Techniques, his MBA in Management of Insurance Companies, and INSEAD programme in Advanced International Corporate Finance.
